  1. BOSTON...Datapoint Corporation (NYSE) announced today at NetWorld the
  2. completion of the high-performance, multi-speed ARCNETPLUS local area
  3. network (LAN) protocol designed to meet network-intensive application
  4. demands. Product shipments will begin in April.

  6. ARCNETPLUS reflects the implementation of several highly creative concepts
  7. never before applied to the LAN environment. The most significant is a LAN
  8. with multiple speed capabilities: ARCNETPLUS performs at a 20 Mbits per
  9. second data transfer rate when exchanging information with ARCNETPLUS
  10. nodes, and at a 2.5 Mbits per second rate when interacting with ARCNET
  11. nodes. ARCNETPLUS supports direct compatibility with existing ARCNET
  12. networks, which account for about 25 percent of the world's LAN
  13. connections.

  15. "This announcement reflects the simple fact that Datapoint, who introduced
  16. the first commercial LAN in 1977, is re-establishing its position as a
  17. leader in the LAN marketplace," stated Jan Berger, Datapoint's Vice
  18. President of Marketing. Berger added that "the flexibility and outstanding
  19. performance of ARCNETPLUS will provide an economic alternative for LAN
  20. power users."

  22. Marketing Director Robert Hollingsworth said, "the ARCNETPLUS technology is
  23. designed for ease of installation, reliability, and conformance with the
  24. International Standards Organization's Open Systems Interconnect
  25. networking model, as well as ANSI ATA 878.1."

  27. ARCNETPLUS has been implemented as standard components to allow developers
  28. to create value-added products with assured network compatibility. In
  29. addition, Datapoint will offer certification testing to guarantee network
  30. integrity.

  32. Datapoint will market ARCNETPLUS through network distributors,
  33. concentrating on organizations which have successfully combined ARCNET PC
  34. LANs with networking software such as Novell.
